Dear Artists and Supporters,

This month Art and Ag is venturing beyond our Yolo county borders to Vagabond Ranch, nearly 100 acres in the beautiful and historic Pleasants Valley north of Vacaville. Owners Steve and Jill plan to put in an apricot and peach orchard on the property to honor the legacy of Pleasants Valley’s earlier days, during which apricots were a major export crop. The land looks much like it did 150 years ago, and the owners’ goal is to change as little as possible.

Vagabond Ranch is truly a “hidden valley”, accessible only by private driveway and invisible from Pleasants Valley Rd. The road to the property meanders up a gentle hill through two cattle gates and opens onto a picturesque expanse of native grasses, valley oaks, and buckeye trees. There are a few original structures including a collapsed 'shepherds hut' and a wooden pumphouse.

Artists may set up on the patio next to the new barn or along the grassy farm road and paint or photograph the view of the rolling hills dotted with oak, grey pine, and giant eucalyptus. To the north of Vagabond Ranch lies the picturesque vineyard of La Borgata Winery, with its goat herd and Tuscan-style farmhouse. And to the south is the expansive Harris Ranch, which is home to a grand 150-year-old redwood barn.

The owner of Harris Ranch, Mrs. Mary Harris, sadly passed away a few weeks ago. Mary was a dear friend of Vagabond Ranch, and was also a lifelong artist and member of the Solano Plein Air Society. In her honor, we have invited a small group of painters from this organization to join the Art and Ag artists on Saturday, June 23. Both the Harris and Vagabond ranches will be open to all artists on this day. During your artistic visit to the Vagabond and Harris Ranches, you will find a hospitality center at the Vagabond Ranch barn, including shade, chairs, drinks, a sandwich bar, and the all-important Port-a-Potty. You may read more about this life of this dearly-loved local artist, Mary Harris HERE.

Please rsvp to jpurnell@yoloarts.org and say which day you will attend.
